Huawei's Budget SUV Shangjie H5 Breaks Records with 25,000+ Orders in First Hour
New SAIC-Huawei collaboration starts at $23,600, bringing premium tech to mainstream market
The automotive world took notice when Huawei and SAIC Motor's latest creation, the Shangjie H5 SUV, racked up over 25,000 pre-orders within just 60 minutes of its launch. Starting at 169,800 yuan ($23,600), this marks Huawei's most accessible vehicle yet.
The impressive debut signals a major shift in China's competitive electric vehicle landscape. The Shangjie H5 represents the fifth brand under Huawei's ambitious Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA), a partnership that's already invested 6 billion yuan into reshaping the automotive sector.
What makes this launch particularly significant is its target market – the sub-200,000 yuan segment that commands 70% of China's domestic car sales. The SUV comes in two flavors: a pure electric version boasting an 80kWh battery pack with 655km of range, and an extended-range variant that can travel 1,360km on a single charge-and-fill cycle.
Both versions feature Huawei's cutting-edge ADS 4 driver assistance system as standard equipment – a premium feature typically reserved for higher-end models. The system incorporates Huawei's World Engine and World Behavior Model architecture, delivering what the company claims is 50% reduced response latency compared to previous generations.
Yu Chengdong, Huawei's Senior VP, emphasized the company's philosophy: "Safety is the greatest luxury." This approach is evident in the ADS 4's four-tier structure, with the top Ultra version capable of L3 highway autonomy.
The Shangjie H5 directly challenges established players like BYD's Song Plus and Xpeng's G6, bringing sophisticated technology to price-conscious consumers. With its official market debut scheduled for September 23, the strong pre-order momentum suggests Chinese buyers are ready to embrace Huawei's vision of accessible smart mobility.
